I’ve been working in the village of Guadalupe Carney for 12 years now. I’m here with my wife Diane, working with the local peasant farmers, called campesinos to do two things: treat their animals and tell them about Jesus.

Short-Term Missions // From Mississippi to Haiti

Last month, Rachel Montgomery, a first year vet student from Mississippi State University, was granted the opportunity to serve on her first CVM Short-term Mission trip.  She packed her bag and boarded a plane destined for Haiti.

Rachel and her team (2 vets, 5 students) spent a week in March working alongside CVM’s long-term missionary Dr. Kelly Crowdis.

Rachel was kind enough to answer a few questions I had about her time in Haiti.

Work with all Your Heart

Colossians 3:23 says, “…whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.”  Here at Purdue, this statement probably holds true for the majority in the veterinary school. However, the second part of that verse reads, “as working for the Lord, not for human masters;” this difference is what sets members of Christian Veterinary Fellowship, and other Christ-followers, apart.

David and Kim Carney have been involved with CVM nearly half their lives.  Kim first became involved with CVM as a vet student at the University of Georgia.  And in 2000, Kim participated in her first CVM short-term mission trip, and it was on this trip that she felt God’s call on her heart to serve long-term.  After graduation, Kim worked at a clinic in Tennessee, while continuing her involvement with CVM by serving as a Board member and participating in more short-term trips.

In the midst of all of this, Kim met and married David who had a similar calling to long-term missions, they had a child, bought a vet practice and a home, participated in their church, deepened relationships with their friends and family, and continued to seek God’s direction and will for their lives.

And after 11 years the call on their hearts remained.  So they decided it was time to act, and they contacted CVM to begin the initial steps and preparation for long-term service. And on February 16, 2014, three years after beginning the long-term process, David, Kim and Caleb (10) Carney left their home in Tennessee. And they boarded a plane destined for their new home in Bolivia to serve long-term.

Prayer for the Ark

arkGuest post by Dr. Lauren Spears-Charles & Dr. Scott Bradley

During the American Animal Hospital Association conference in Nashville, Tennessee, 28 CVM friends gathered for a breakfast devotional on our annual theme of “Called.” The casual atmosphere put people at ease and the song “Oceans”, by Hillsong energized the group for the day of CE ahead (listen to the song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YtZiP8ZCdLc). As conversations began to stir, Dr. Scott Bradley felt the Lord leading him to share the prayer he prays over his clinic.

In 1984, Dr. Bradley opened The Ark Animal Clinic in Las Vegas, NV, with his wife Dr. Ann Bradley, 12 years before he became a Christian.  He just liked the name “The Ark.” But now he sees that God was probably watching with a grin, as He had great plans for how He would use The Ark to expand His kingdom.

As Dr. Bradley read this prayer to the group at AAHA, which he says is not a mantra but a guideline for how to pray for their clinic, he teared up at the line about the words we all long to hear…

Prayer for the Ark

LORD, you are our God and our Father.  We will ever praise you.  We seek you this day and thank you for your sacrificial love for us.

LORD, we are nothing without you.  Our mission is to give You glory, to be the salt in this tasteless world and the light to shine in the darkness.

LORD, we ask that you give us this day our daily bread and help us to be grateful stewards of the blessings that you bestow on us.  Help us to seek Your will through the challenges that face us this day and grow in a manner that pleases You.

Help us also to recognize and act on opportunities to point others to You, to help to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim the good news to the captives, to release the prisoners from darkness, and to live in such a manner that we are called oaks of righteousness and hear from You those words we long to hear… “Well done, good and faithful servant!”

LORD, thank You for the opportunity to serve You this day and thank You for blessing us with the knowledge, skills, and gift of healing so that we may have the opportunity to bring health and wellness to our patients, peace and joy to our clients, and honor and glory to You.  Give us the wisdom and discernment we need this day to accomplish this.  Help us to continually grow in the knowledge and skills that will enable us to better serve You and our clients and patients.

May we take the opportunities that are presented to us to point those that do not know You as their Savior towards You and to encourage those that do know You as their Savior to have a stronger walk with You.  LORD, raise up and bring forth the intercessors that we need today so that we may be prepared to accomplish Your will for us this day.  We lift up those that come on our hearts today that Your will be done in their lives, give comfort to those that have suffered loss and spiritual and physical healing for those in need.

LORD, the Ark Animal Clinic is yours.  Forgive us for the times when we desire to take control of it. It is all about You LORD, not about us.  We consecrate these grounds and this practice to You.  Surround it with Your angels to war for us.  We set the Cross of Christ between all people, all plans, and all spirits that are set against us this day.  We put on Your full armor; the belt of Truth, the breastplate of Righteousness, the shoes of the Gospel, and we don the helmet of Salvation and pick up the sword of the Spirit and the shield of Faith to battle for those in our domain.  We call forth the Kingdom and the Life of Jesus the Messiah over our kingdom and lives.  We bind the strongman of chaos and his underlings including miscommunication, frustration, and diminishment from these premises and we call forth the spirits of Truth, Life, Fullness, and Peace to inhabit these premises this day.

LORD, we pray that You continue to send us the employees that are needed to bring forth Your Kingdom here on earth and the clients and business that are necessary to provide for our needs.  We give You all the praise and honor and glory this day.  We pray these things in the power and by the authority of the Name above all names, the Lord of lords and the King of kings, Jesus, the Messiah.

Amen and Amen
