The Glorification of Being Busy

We hear that some among you are idle and disruptive. They are not busy; they are busybodies.” (2 Thessalonians 3:11)

Sometimes the Bible speaks so directly! That verse in 2 Thessalonians hit me today.

The most common question I get in the summer is, “So is this a busy time for you?”

In American culture, we are so eager to talk about how busy we are. I often fall into the trap. Speaking from this perspective, my answer would be- I live at a slower pace during the summer. I stay home in Madison and enjoy the city in my free time, while work includes preparing conference speakers, and planning visits to the eight universities I serve. Then I say something like, “But in the fall, I’m quite busy, traveling constantly.”

Is Jesus Enough?

By: Dr. Fred Van Gorkom, Africa Regional Director

Is Jesus enough?

God had given peace in the land, and Joshua was getting old, so he called all the leaders of Israel together and challenged them.  It’s the same challenge for us today.

Serve the Lord!  Otherwise, choose who you are going to serve—whether the gods your forefathers served, or the gods of the culture and place where you live now. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. (Fredaphrase, Josh 24)

You and I are serving someone: the living God or our own gods… gods of food, comfort, sex, security, entertainment, power, position, self-reliance, even the god of Me.  Who do you serve?

Consider it all Joy

By: Dr. Kit Flowers, CVM President

“Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”  –James 1:2-4

As I write this, my life is in a good place. I feel close to the Lord, my health is good, I have a loving and caring wife and family, and I work with an amazing team of people who are purposed to hear from God and obey His calling.  It is pretty easy today, to consider it all joy!   Wait a minute, can I really say there are not various trials around me?  I have close friends living with the challenge of serious illness.  I need only to listen to the news and know that our world is in difficult times. I do not have to think very long before I remember close friends who are in places of personal conflict with others. My mind can then go to my own “various trials” of the past.  I have to consider it all joy today. Each and every day.

How about you?  Are you able today to consider it all joy?

Trauma of 3rd Grade Math

Share Button

By: Dr. Troy Sammons

Kate our middle daughter is currently a homeschooling third grader, her sisters and her are diligent students, most of the time, but there is the occasional time where dad, the “pinch hitter” teacher, needs to look over the math worksheets to make sure that I am keeping up what’s going on.   In general, I have no strong aversion to math as it is practical and methodical and useful to everyday life, but there is one type of problem that brings back childhood trauma every time I spot one.
