The Yoke of Victory

A few months ago, I hit an all-time career low point.  I had a few cases that, despite my best efforts, did not turn out well. I cried out to God for Him to allow these patients to pull through, but they continued to worsen. I turned from asking for healing, to asking for a new case that would give me and my clinic a victory to rally around. I remember His words clearly as he spoke to my heart after weeks of pleading, “Heidi, was My Victory not enough?”

This was one of those moments where God hits me so hard with His simple yet profound truth that I just wanted to crawl up into a little ball and plant my palm right smack in the middle of my forehead!

I have struggled in this profession with finding peace among the chaos and with giving up control of my day-to-day clinical life. It is so natural for me to try and control my days in practice, but those are the days where I end up in a pit of despair and stress.

The days when I fix my eyes on Jesus (Hebrews 12:2) and realize that the testing of my faith produces perseverance so that I may be mature and complete – not lacking in anything (James 1:3-4) and recall the Victory that Christ won for me on the Cross, are the days where my soul is at rest.

So how do we as veterinarians do this? We get under His yoke, my friend!  Matthew 11:29-30 says, “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Do not try to plow that field alone like the Israelites did back in the time of Jeremiah when God said, “they too had broken off the yoke…therefore a lion from the forest will attack them.” (Jeremiah 5:5-6).  When you are face-to-face with the demands of veterinary medicine, do not stand up and break off the yoke of Christ as authority and protector over your life and career.  Instead, humble yourself before God, submit to His will, and stay under that yoke of peace, love, freedom, and victory.  The next time you are faced with a frustration at work, take a couple of seconds to bow your head and repeat in your mind, ‘Jesus, I trust You, for Your yoke is easy.’ Then, feel His peace wash over you and transcend your day-to-day life no matter what chaos surrounds you.
