I am stirred in my heart this Christmas season that we are to be people who purpose to set our minds on Christ.

“Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the things above, not on the things that are on earth.  For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.”  Col 3:1-3

These words from the apostle Paul to the church in Colossea, is a great reminder as we celebrate the birth of our Lord.  There is so much to distract us in the world.  We all have deep concerns as we reflect on the state of our world.  Most of us have family and friends walking through deep trials.  Even if we can set aside all of these concerns, the hustle and bustle of the holidays can steal away the hope and joy of the Christmas season.

Paul gives us a great challenge.   We must know the Christ of Christmas as our Savior and be purposed in the reality of daily life to keep seeking Him.   I like the continuous sense of his words, keep seeking.  Other translations use the words like: pursue, stay focused, think about, set your affection.   As we enter the Christmas season we are to set our mind on things above, not on the things that are on the earth.  The foundation of our celebration is that we know that we have died and our life is hidden with Christ in God.

The prophet Isaiah foretold of His Incarnation.

For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; and the government will rest on His shoulders.  And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.  There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness from then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will accomplish this.”  Isaiah 9:6-7

This amazing promise was fulfilled on that Christmas day in the manger.  We have found the hope of this good news.  We can and must be people who purpose to keep seeking the things above that we may know Him and make Him known to others.

We are blessed to walk with so many who live the truth of these words.  They know the Christ of Christmas and they are purposed to keep seeking and setting their minds on things above.   We are encouraged as others are discovering this amazing Savior for the first time and we have the opportunity to hear and sometimes to see the transformation in their lives.

We celebrate with you the wonder of the child given to us.   He is a Wonderful Counselor, the Mighty God, the Eternal Father, and the Prince of Peace.   Let us not be overcome by the things of this world in this season, but let us set our minds to know His peace and to be instruments of that peace to each other and to a world which so desperately needs Him.  We look forward to what He has for us all in 2017.
