Lina Godine, a vet student from Virginia, was given the opportunity to serve on her second short-term mission trip with CVM to Nicaragua. Lina and her team spent a week working alongside Pastor Oscar and Tamy Gaitan.
Lina was kind enough to answer a few questions for us!
Q: What did you learn about missions during your time of short-term service? What did you learn about your hosts’ ministry in particular?
Lina: I was reminded that “missions” are not limited to just a one or two week trip a few times each year…God calls us to live life on mission and constantly share the good news of His Gospel with everyone around us. I learned from Tamy and
Oscar that one of the best ways to do this is by developing a relationship with people (rather than telling them about
Jesus once and then moving on to another person or village).
Q: What was encouraging and/or surprising to you about short-term missions service?
Lina: It was encouraging to see how faithful God is to provide what we need when we need it. We worked really hard in some
pretty hot and dry conditions, and sometimes the animals were not tame or “friendly”. However, God provided each
day–He kept us safe and gave us the energy we needed to accomplish the tasks for that day.
Q: What was particularly challenging to you during this time of service?
Lina: It was difficult to maintain a positive and a servant’s attitude when I was dehydrated and sunburned and exhausted. It reminds me of how true Jesus’ servant attitude was when He took the cross and suffered far more discomfort than I did and yet He never complained or quit.
Q: What did you learn about the particular challenges facing the local community in which you served?
Lina: I learned that the veterinary schools in Nicaragua are not well equipped and that many of the graduates feel unprepared for their job.
Q: How was the local community impacted as a result of CVM’s service in this area?
Lina: They were blessed by our service to their animals and our willingness and eagerness to engage with them (the people) too. We also helped Oscar and Tamy make more connections for their ministry and, by doing so, helped make more connections and relationship for the Gospel to shine
Q: How was your faith impacted as a result of your short-term missions service?
Lina: The trip was such an encouragement to me and for my faith! My teammates and trip leaders are such wonderful
reminders to me of what it looks like to live in Christian community and be challenged and encouraged in my walk with Christ.
Q: What next steps of faith is God calling you to as a result of this trip? How can CVM support, encourage, and equip you for these next steps?
Lina: God is calling me to keep trusting Him with my future and my education. This semester is promising to be a very busy one, and on my own I get overwhelmed just thinking about it. But with God’s strength and joy, I know He will get me though this semester and will help me be a light for Him in the process!
A special thank you to Lina Godine for allowing us to share in a little piece of her journey to Nicaragua! May the Lord continue to use this experience to touch the lives of others.
